NutriLive: An Integrated Nutritional Approach as a Sustainable Tool to Prevent Malnutrition inOlder People and Promote Active and Healthy Ageing—The EIP-AHA Nutrition Action Group

This article presents the NutriLive project, a pan-European initiative within the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP-AHA). The project focuses on preventing malnutrition in older adults and promoting active and healthy ageing. NutriLive has developed a shared European nutritional model based on an integrated approach, recognising nutrition as a key factor in maintaining functionality and quality of life among older individuals.

At the core is the SAM-AP model (Screening-Assessment-Monitoring–Action Pyramid), which links validated tools for screening and monitoring to targeted nutritional interventions across three levels: primary (culinary), secondary (functional foods and supplements), and tertiary (medicinal and clinical). Inspired by Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the model also considers contextual factors such as social integration, cultural background, economic status, and dietary habits.

NutriLive is based on two key hypotheses: (1) malnutrition and frailty among older adults can be addressed through a multidimensional and transnational approach, and (2) a shared, digitally supported EU strategy for personalised nutrition can yield effective health outcomes. The project aims to collect data through an interoperable ICT platform that links individual nutritional profiles and epidemiological trends to appropriate interventions. This platform supports data monitoring, citizen engagement, knowledge exchange (e.g., recipes and blogs), and policy development.
